The things she says….

16 Apr

Edie is saying so many amazing things these days, and I’m always forgetting to write them down; they’re so amazing, I figure I can’t forget them, but then she’s on to something else! Anyway, here are two things that I loved recently:

1) “I’m getting the sun in my mouth.” – It’s been a long, cold winter in Spokane. She’s been waiting and waiting for the summer, for when “we can have no clothes on!!!” We finally have had a few warm days, and she seems just as happy as I am to see the sun.

2) “Why did the bear go to the hospital? Because he felt gummy!” – We’ve been telling jokes lately. Her first was: “What did the zero say to the eight? Nice belt!” After hearing that one over and over again, we decided it was time for some new material. So she learned “Why did the cookie go to the hospital? Because he felt crummy!” and “What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear!” And of course, our child, being the extreme genius that she is, has already figured out meta-humor and made a joke about the jokes she’s been learning.

Composing

I’m borrowing a keyboard from a friend right now, and Edie decided she wanted to rock out on it (she’s still playing as I write this!). It warms my heart to see her having fun with music.

She has a smaller keyboard that she likes to play on, too, but this was the first time she has played on a full size keyboard. I actually brought the keyboard home last night after Edie had gone to bed, and when she came downstairs this morning she said “What happened to my keyboard? How did you make it bigger?” You see, she has a small keyboard that looks pretty similar:

Here’s one for ya…

A new post!  All the way back in October (click on the link in the previous sentence or go to October 20th)!!  Because our trip to pick out pumpkins was too cute not to post about, I wrote this and back dated it to where it should be chronologically.  But even though it is late it’s a good post, pictures, videos and even vintage pictures from the early 1980′s :-)  Here’s one to get you in the mood.

Yogi Toddler

Edie has been taking a toddler yoga class with our wonderful friend Janny. It’s so fun to watch her focus so well! Here’s a quick video of her practicing the Sun Salutation at home the other night:

Update: Edie has been practicing throwing fits lately, too, and we’ve been practicing handling them. The other day she threw herself on the ground and started into one, and I said “Uh oh Edie, that looks like you’re throwing a fit.” She responded “It’s not a fit – it’s savasana.”

Life and Letters!

25 Feb

Hi everyone,

It’s been so long since we’ve posted anything and, like most things the longer you put something off the harder it gets to just DO it.  I’m taking the plunge tonight because, with an exam looming in 2 weeks and umpteen other things that need to be done, this is the perfect time to start blogging again… right?

So our absence wasn’t due to anything big or exciting, just life, you know?  Enough blabbing on my part- I know why you’re here, and she is currently oh-so-kindly snoozing away upstairs, busy “growing bigger and bigger every day!” (as she reminds us daily).  This past week I feel like I’m seeing her in a new light, my  little girl with very little baby left in her.

Today as we were driving out of the ACE hardware parking lot she announced that she saw “an E for EDIE!!!!!” and pointed to the giant red E in the Ace sign.  It knocked my socks off.  Zach and I have been very relaxed with her about pre-reading and writing learning (read: we haven’t really done anything :-) .  We might occasionally talk about letters, especially the ones in her name, and every once in a while she’ll sing part of the alphabet song but really we haven’t even tried to teach her anything. The Waldorf school she attends 1 day a week has no mention of letters, it is purely play-based.

Despite our lack of attention to the matter, Edie seems to feel it is high time to start figuring out this words and letters business.  She has been doing a lot of “reading” of her favorite books recently where she recites what she remembers of the words (her accuracy always impresses me) and the story based on the pictures.  Here’s a cute video of her reading her Aunt Margaux’s book Out in the Garden (and yes she always reads books upside down, I think it is in imitation of what she sees at Llibrary Story Time maybe? But cute regardless).

Parenting my very precocious, self-assured, bossy, and most wonderful daughter is not always smooth or easy but WOW is it ever worth it.
